Is TEFL Level 5 Worth It?

March 26, 2025

The two most common levels of TEFL certification are Levels 3 and 5, but what do these levels mean, how do the courses differ, and how do career and employment opportunities vary depending on the level attained?

In this post, we will answer all the key questions, leaving you better informed and able to make a decision best suited to your requirements. As one of the leading TEFL providers, we are also always available to answer any queries, helping to pair you with the learning that can provide you with wonderful TEFL opportunities.

Key differences between TEFL Level 3 and 5

Depth of Study & Course Difficulty

Both levels can be achieved by any student willing to apply themselves to the structured learning, but level 5 is a more in-depth and advanced qualification. While Level 3 might be seen as more of an introductory course – though still equivalent to the rigours of A-level learning in the UK – Level 5 is respected as being equivalent to a foundation degree, making it an incredibly powerful qualification.

A Level 5 TEFL certificate has a deeper focus on lesson planning, grammar, the science of teaching methodology and how this can be applied practically.

Job Opportunities & Employability

Level 3 opens up some job opportunities, though these are likely to be entry-level or even unpaid voluntary work at summer camps or similar. Some private tutoring might also be an option for those with TEFL level 3.

Level 3 opens up a world of opportunity, especially for those who want a way to travel and a skill that opens up opportunities within volunteering or entry-level posts.

However, while level 5 might only sound a little improved, it, in reality, opens up a different level of opportunity. Those with TEFL level 5 will find opportunities within the more reputable schools and language institutions across Europe, the Middle East and Asia – indeed, many will require level 5 before they consider any applicant.

Level 5 is also a qualification likely to be better paid, and for those entering private tutoring, a higher fee can be charged.

For a manageable amount more effort, a huge amount of added value is unlocked.

Course length and commitment

As you would expect of a course set at a higher level, TEFL courses to level 5 are longer and require more time to complete. While the time taken will vary by student, a ballpark figure would be 120 hours of study for level 3 compared to 250 – 300 for level 5.

In the classroom, this added commitment can be a determining factor, especially with the need to potentially travel to lessons. However, online-based TEFL providers such as our service have revolutionised the industry, and now the extra hours are far less of a burden. Learning can be undertaken at home, at a time of your choosing, and at your own pace. This has made level 5 far more attainable for most people.

Salary expectations

The amount possible to earn with a TEFL qualification will vary by location and provider – and some roles for TEFL level 3 will be unpaid.

As a useful guide, we would expect those with a level 5 certification to be able to find roles that pay roughly double what a level 3 student might be paid. In respected language schools in the highest-paying countries, this can be in excess of $6,000 per month. Elsewhere, pay might be less, but so too is the cost of living – in all instances, TEFL level 5 is a qualification that can provide a comfortable way of life while getting to experience a huge variety of countries.

Can I start with TEFL Level 3 and upgrade?

Choosing to start with a lower level of qualification, which is less demanding on time, can be a smart option depending on the desired outcome.

At Full Circle, for instance, we have courses that vary in hours and bolt-ons that further enhance the student’s understanding and employability.

However, we have also designed the TEFL Level 5 online course to be worked through from start to finish, and it remains our most popular option. Even while working full time and taking the course in evenings and spare time, it can be completed within six months and far quicker still for those who have more time to dedicate.

In the majority of instances, we believe it is worth committing to the extra time and small extra expense to unlock a qualification that is exponentially more powerful.

But if you do start with a more basic course, our advisors are always on hand to chat and advise on how this can be upscaled.

Is Level 5 far harder?

No. Level 5 is more in-depth, but it is not inherently more difficult. It simply builds on what you would learn in level 3 and other preliminary courses. If anything, learning gets easier as you build on concepts developed.

Furthering skills also enables those embarking on exciting TEFL journeys to approach roles with greater confidence as they have greater teaching craft and learnt more enhanced strategies.

With full support, such as from our always-available help resources, any TEFL course can be completed.

We do provide a full refund to anyone who fails, but we have faith you won’t need this fallback!

Are the levels the same for online and in-class learning?

The differentiating factor for TEFL qualifications is the level achieved, rather than the course platform – just so long as any course you undertake is fully accredited.

Our courses are online and can be accessed via phone, laptop or tablet. Others prefer in-class courses, as is their prerogative.

However, our online course has the same accreditation standard, a level 5 TEFL from online as valuable as a classroom version. At the end of the course, on completion, the certificate will say you are a TEFL level 5 teacher.

Which countries can I teach in with TEFL level 3 vs 5

Some countries will have TEFL roles open for both levels of qualification, though the roles will vary – for instance, low-paid or voluntary roles for level 3 vs higher-paid level 5 positions.

But in other nations and territories, there will be instances when only those with a TEFL level 5 accreditation can work; for instance, visa issues mean that Japan, China and South Korea are not realistic options for those only holding level 3.

Which one is right for you?

The fact that you are weighing up between levels 3 and 5 suggests you have considered both. Our recommendation would be to give serious consideration to level 5.

A bit more work creates a lot more opportunity.
